Yiddish Theater in Adaptation Session at Yiddish New York 2016 - Luisa will direct and perform excer


This year at Yiddish New York Luisa will direct and perform as part of the Yiddish Theater in Adaptation classes (Harnick, Levison, Rosenzweig, Sandrow, Solomon, Wex). The performances will be held:on Tuesday, December 27th (Threepenny Opera) and Wednesday, December 28th (Fiddler on the Roof).

These performance/panel workshops are for anyone interested in the adaptation of Yiddish theater in times when Yiddish is the first language of few, if any, of the actors or audience. Each session we will present an excerpt from a play, followed by a discussion about language, adaptation, contemporary and historical context, as well as other issues pertaining to Yiddish theater in the modern era.

  • PM2 (Tuesday) - The Threepenny Opera - A Yiddish adaptation of the Bertolt Brecht’s classic by NY Times bestselling author Michael Wex. The workshop will be moderated by pioneering theater scholar Nahma Sandrow. With a performance of a scene from Wex’s adaptation, directed by Luisa Muhr. With performances by Joanne Borts, Daniel Kahn, Anna Rozenfeld, and others TBA.

  • PM2 (Wednesday) Fiddler on the Roof - YNY is thrilled to have on hand Tony/Pulitzer Prize winner Sheldon Harnick, one of the most distinguished lyricists in the history of musical theater, best-known for writing Fiddler with Jerry Bock. Harnick will be joined by Alisa Solomon (Columbia University) as he discusses adapting Fiddler from the stories of Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem. With musical performances of songs from Fiddler on the Roof. With performances by Joanne Borts, Daniel Kahn, Jack Mendelson, Luisa Muhr, Rachel Weston, and others TBA.
